Mount Dora: Synagogue Vandalism

Date: July 2011

“The recent Crimeline tip received regarding the hate crime-vandalism at the Jewish Synagogue in Mount Dora was critical and directly led to solving the case and arresting those responsible for this reprehensible act. Unfortunately, the synagogue’s prominent location in the middle of our downtown area placed undeserved attention on the very type of intolerance contrary to all that Mount Dora stands for. The discriminatory nature of the hurtful words and phrases placed by those responsible could easily divide a community. The rapid identification and apprehension of the suspects was instrumental in bringing our community together and beginning the healing process for this hateful act. Crimeline continues its years-long tradition of being an indispensible and integral component of solving crime in Central Florida”.

The call center is housed in one tiny room, but it offers the greatest hope of solving some of the worst crimes in Central Florida.

"This allows people to do the right thing for the right reason, and in the end, if there is a cash reward, then so be it," Barbara Bergin of the Orlando Police Department said. "But I would tell you that I think most people call Crimeline for the right reason. They want their community to be a safer place to live."

Crimeline staff got fewer than six tips after Gordon’s killing, but those anonymous tips led to the capture of Smith and Terry, and the recovery of the weapon that may have been used in the slaying.
